Silksong’s First Expansion Is Set to Launch Next Year and Will Be Completely Free

September brought a wave of major updates across the video game industry. However, many indie releases were forced to delay their launch plans due to the arrival of Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight that quickly became a major talking point among fans. Three months after its release, Team Cherry has now confirmed the game’s first downloadable expansion, which will be available at no additional cost.

Over the past few years, Hollow Knight has established itself as one of the most successful indie games ever released. The original game surpassed 15 million copies sold worldwide, while Silksong managed to reach 7 million units in just three months. Despite the long development cycle and the lack of frequent updates over the years, the community response to the sequel has been overwhelmingly positive.

Since its launch, Silksong has enjoyed global success, and Team Cherry has begun to outline some of the major additions planned for the coming year. At the same time, the studio has not forgotten about the original Hollow Knight, which is also set to receive a new version. A dedicated edition is currently in development for Nintendo Switch 2, featuring a range of technical and visual enhancements.

Sea of Sorrows Will Launch in 2026 as a Free Expansion Featuring New Tools, Bosses, and Areas

Team Cherry has long been known for its unconventional approach to announcements. Rather than relying on large-scale marketing campaigns, the studio often shares its news in a simple and direct way. This time, a short blog post paired with a 45-second teaser video was more than enough to capture players’ attention and reignite excitement around Silksong.

The game’s first expansion will be titled Sea of Sorrows. According to the developers, it will introduce players to a brand-new experience centered around exploration above and below the ocean, supported by a distinctive atmosphere. For now, the studio has chosen to keep specific details under wraps and plans to reveal the full scope of the expansion shortly before its official release.

As previously confirmed, Sea of Sorrows is scheduled to arrive sometime next year and will be free for all players, regardless of the platform they are playing on.

Beyond the Silksong expansion, Team Cherry is also actively working on an enhanced edition of the original Hollow Knight for Nintendo Switch 2. This updated version will include all improvements introduced over the years, along with features tailored specifically to the new console, such as higher frame-rate options, increased resolution, and upgraded visual effects.

The goal of this release is to bring the game in line with modern hardware standards without forcing fans to repurchase it. Players who already own Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version at no cost when it becomes available in 2026.

In addition, the studio has plans to roll out further updates on PC, including support for native 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios in future patches.
